Cold-Formed Steel Buildings - Strong, Versatile & Designed for You
Cold-formed steel buildings offer a modern approach to structural framing. Precisely manufactured galvanized steel components provide a versatile alternative to conventional structural-steel and wood-framed construction for residential, commercial, agricultural and utility buildings.
Cold-formed steel is sheet steel shaped into structural profiles at room temperature. ACT’s system uses galvanized framing members, including Cee and Zee sections, joined with bolts or screws rather than field-welded framing connections. Galvanizing provides a protective zinc coating; corrosion detailing still needs to suit the site.
The shaped profiles can provide useful strength relative to their weight. Member sizes, connections, bracing and foundations still need to be designed for the actual spans, site loads and intended use. Light weight alone does not establish a building's capacity.

The cold-formed steel advantage
Why Build With Cold-Formed Steel?
Not all steel buildings are created equal. Precision-manufactured galvanized steel framing offers a versatile alternative to traditional heavy red-iron framing for residential, agricultural and commercial projects.
Strong, Lightweight Construction
Precision-manufactured cold-formed members provide structural strength relative to their weight. Lighter individual components can simplify material handling compared with heavier traditional steel framing; capacity still depends on the engineered design.
No Field Welding Required for Framing
ACT describes framing connections that bolt or screw together without field welding. This can simplify structural assembly and reduce the need for welding equipment. Confirm any project-specific fabrication or other site work separately.
Fully Customizable Designs
Explore building dimensions, doors, windows, roof styles, lean-tos and mezzanines. Available features and their dimensions depend on the building system, intended use and engineering review.
Efficient Construction
Planned manufacturing and lighter framing members can streamline handling and assembly and help reduce unnecessary material waste. Actual labor, equipment needs and construction schedules depend on the complete project.
Durable Steel Framing
Steel does not rot like wood and is not a food source for termites. Properly specified galvanized framing can provide a durable structure, with corrosion protection and moisture management suited to the location.
Engineered for Your Location
Your building needs engineering for its site, intended use and applicable loading requirements, including wind and snow where relevant. Confirm the design criteria, required drawings and local approvals before proceeding.
Both can be appropriate engineered solutions. Compare the complete building design, not just the framing material.
Comparison of typical cold-formed steel and traditional red-iron framing
Consideration
Cold-formed steel
Traditional red iron
Primary members
Shaped sheet-steel profiles
Typically hot-rolled or built-up heavier frames
Handling
Lighter individual members may simplify handling
Heavier members may require larger lifting equipment
Connections
ACT framing uses bolted or screwed connections without field welding
Bolted and/or welded connections, depending on the system
Installation
Planned assembly; equipment depends on sizes and site access
Lifting and connection requirements depend on the frame and site
Design flexibility
Openings, roofs, lean-tos and mezzanines within system limits
Custom configurations within the engineered frame design
Applications
Residential, commercial, agricultural and utility uses where suitable
Commercial, agricultural, industrial and other suitable uses
Design suitability

Potential efficiencies—not guaranteed savings
Planned fabrication and lighter members may reduce some handling effort and on-site assembly work. Actual efficiencies depend on the system, crew, site access and project complexity. Foundations, transport, permits, insulation and finishes can materially affect total cost and schedule.
